Orrick Advises WHILL in $17.5 million in Series B Fundraising

Orrick advised WHILL, Inc., a designer and developer of high-technology personal mobility devices, in raising USD 17.5 million (JPY 1.9 billion) in a Series B Fundraising. The funding was led by Eight Roads Ventures, a venture capital firm specializing in early and later stage investments, with the participation of investors such as Mirai Creation Investment Limited Partnership and Golden Asia Fund II.

This investment will enable WHILL to expand its market presence in the U.S. and worldwide through sales of its latest product, the next-generation Model M wheelchair.  In addition, the company plans to accelerate its research and development programs related to autonomous driving and remote device management systems, and to implement a rental program at airports.

The cross-border US/Tokyo Orrick team was led by Joseph Perkins, partner in Silicon Valley office, and included Ben Spitz (managing associate, Tokyo), Bernardo Ainza (associate, Silicon Valley), and Andrew Barlow (senior paralegal, Silicon Valley).

Orrick serves as general corporate counsel to WHILL, which has now raised a total of USD 30.2 million in funding since its incorporation.
